This is a COMMON MISCONCEPTION that there is a specific duaa (called 'Duaa Taraaweeh or Tasbeeh Taraaweeh') to be read in between the rakaat of Taraaweeh.
The Duaa
“Subhana dhil Mulki wal Malakuti, Subhana dhil izzati wal aDhmati wal haybati wal Qudrati, wal kibriyaa’i wal jabaroot Subhanal Malikil hayyil ladhi, la yunaamu wa layamut, Subbuhun Quddusun Rabbul malaa’ikati war-ruh. Allahumma ajirna minan-naar Ya Mujiru ya Mujiru ya Mujiru.”
You see people reading this tasbeeh very religiously after every 2 or 4 rak’aat of taraaweeh.
In fact some masaajid even have posters and overhead projectors that highlight and display this duaa so that the people can read it.
But there is NO PROOF of reading this particular duaa after 2 or 4 rak’aat of Taraaweeh in the Sharee’ah.
You see, any kind of duaa, tasbeeh or dhikr is a form of worship.
And all acts of worship are 'tawqeefi' which mean that nothing is permitted as Ibaadah except that which is prescribed and proven by the Qur'aan and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
So let’s look at the practice of the Prophet ﷺ and his Sahaabah.
Did they read ANY specific duaa in between the rak’aat of Taraaweeh?
No they did NOT.
The Prophet ﷺ himself prayed Taraaweeh and led his Sahaabah in it.
And the Sahaabah prayed Taraaweeh as well.
But they did NOT say this duaa or ANY OTHER specific duaa in between the rak’aat of Taraaweeh.
🍃 Shaykh Muhammad al-‘Abdari ibn al-Haaj said:
“He should avoid what has been innovated of reciting dhikr after each two rak’ahs of Taraaweeh prayer...All of that is bid’ah and innovation in religion is forbidden.
The best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad ﷺ then the four caliphs who came after him, then the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them all), and it is NOT narrated that ANY of the salaf did that, and we should be content with what was sufficient for them.”
(Al-Madkhal, 2/293, 294)
If it was good to say this specific dhikr at this specific time, the Prophet ﷺ surely would have read it himself and taught his Sahaabah as well.
But he didn't.
And if he ﷺ didn't do it, then why should WE?
Surely, following the Prophet ﷺ should be much more important and beloved to all of us than following culture and what we've 'seen' people around us do, without any proof!
It’s NOT ALLOWED for us to do ANY act of Ibaadah without proof from the authentic practice or teachings of the Prophet ﷺ.
Otherwise it counts as bid’ah.
🍃 The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever does an action that is not part of this matter of ours (Islam) will have it rejected."
(Muslim 1718)
🍃 The scholars of the Standing Committee said:
“There is no basis in the Sunnah for saying duaa between one salaam and the other during taraaweeh prayer;
and neither the Imaam or those praying behind him are obliged to do that, because worship is governed by the principle that nothing is permitted except that which was prescribed by the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ.
Constantly doing a particular act of worship at a particular time without any evidence for that comes under the heading of bid’ah or innovation.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever does an action that is not part of this matter of ours (Islam) will have it rejected.” (Agreed upon)
None of these things were narrated from the Prophet ﷺ hence the Standing Committee issued a fatwa to the effect that they are innovations and bid’ahs.”
(Fatawa al-Lajnah al-Daimah, 7/207-210)
📌 Remember this GOLDEN rule:
All goodness lies in following the ways of the Prophet ﷺ and his noble Sahaabah.
Theirs’ is the way to success and the Pleasure of Allaah.
THERE’S NO OTHER WAY.
And Allaah knows best.
