ANSWER
No.
That’s NOT the correct understanding of this prayer.
🔷 The hadeeth that is commonly quoted regarding this is NOT AUTHENTIC.
The so-called Hadeeth in question is related by Umar ibn Abi Khath’am and is the following:
“Whoever prays six Rak’aat after Maghrib and does not say anything bad in between them, will have a reward equal to the worship of twelve years.”
But this is a VERY WEAK hadeeth.
And a weak hadeeth means that it’s highly doubtful that the Prophet ﷺ ever said that or did that or approved of that.
🍃Imaam al-Bukhaari said:
“The Hadeeth by Umar ibn Abdullah ibn Abu Khath’am is to be REJECTED”
and he classed it as “Dha’eef Jiddan” or “very inauthentic”.
🍃 Shaykh al-Albaani said:
“It is Dha’eef Jiddan (very inauthentic).
There are other Ahaadeeth which encourage praying between Maghrib and Ishaa’ but they are ALL INAUTHENTIC.”
(Dha’eef at-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb 332-335)
🔷The CORRECT understanding is that Salaatul Awwaabeen is actually a kind of “Duhaa prayer” and is the same as what we call “chaasht” prayer in Urdu.
It is prayed after the sun has risen but before noon when it’s really HOT.
It is better to delay it until the day is hotter.
If you pray Duhaa at its early time soon after sunrise, it is called “Ishraaq”.
And if you pray it later in the forenoon, it is called “Awwaabeen” and ALL of it is Duhaa.
📌 Proof:
🍃The Prophet ﷺ said:
“It is preferable to offer Duhaa prayer when the sun’s heat has become so intense that even the young of the camels feel it.”
(Saheeh Muslim 748)
🍃 Zayd ibn Arqam radhi Allaahu anhu saw some people praying Duhaa early and said:
"Do they not know that praying at some other time than this is better?
The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said:
‘Salaat al-Awwaabeen is when the young camels lift up their feet (because of the HEAT of the sand).'"
(Saheeh Muslim 1237)
🍃 And the Prophet ﷺ said:
“No one persists in offering Duhaa prayer except one who often turns to Allaah, for it is the prayer of those who often turn to Allaah (Salaat al-awwaabeen).”
(Ibn Khuzaymah; hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh at-Targheeb wa’t-targheeb 1/164).
🍃 Imaam An-Nawawi said:
“The phrase ‘Salaat al-Awwabeen is when the young camels lift up their feet (because of the heat of the sand)’ refers to when the sand becomes unbearably hot from the sun’s heat, and burns the soles of the young camels feet, so they alternately raise and lower their feet in response to the heat of the sand.
Al-Awwaab means one who is obedient, or one who turns to obedience.
The Hadeeth also refers to the best time to offer this prayer, although it is permissible to pray it any time after the sun has risen and before it reaches its zenith.”
(Sharh Muslim)
🔷 So what about Nawaafil after Maghrib?
Yes it is true that the Prophet ﷺ and the Sahaabah did offer nawaafil after maghrib.
BUT they prayed GENERAL UNSPECIFIED nawaafil at this time, without fixing a specific number and without calling it any name.
And they did NOT name these nawaafil as “Awwaabeen”.
🍃 Hudhayfah radhi Allaahu anhu said:
“I came to the Prophet ﷺ and prayed Maghrib with him.
When he had finished the prayer, he stood and prayed, and he kept praying until he prayed Ishaa’.”
(Ahmad 22926; saheeh by al-Albaani in Irwa’ Al-Ghaleel 470)
So it is recommended to offer nawaafil after maghrib.
But WITHOUT specifying a particular name and WITHOUT fixing a specific number.
And Allaah knows best.
